The Lab Center of the College of Humanities, known as the Chinese Documents and Language Information Processing Teaching Lab Center of Shenzhen University, was established in 2006, comprising the Language Information Processing Lab and the Phoetics Lab. It is aimed at serving experimental teaching and promoting the integration of teaching and research, and it is dedicated to talent cultivation in language information processing. It is a "special zone" for innovation in teaching methods.
The center takes up nearly 100 square meters of laboratory space, and is located in H6-101 of Huiwen Building. It has teaching and laboratory equipments worth more than 3 million yuan, including voiceprinter, larynx instrument, server, audio and video recording. Compared with the traditional teaching mode, the Lab Center provides a richer interactive learning mode for the students. The center currently has nine lab instructors and one technician. The faculty members have different research areas and can provide guidance to students in various fields. Here students can realize the teaching mode of "learning by doing, learning in doing", and can participate in the research projects of professors, as well as develop their own projects. The center organizes students to apply for “Innovative Development Foundation Laboratory Project of SZU", and there are 50 applicants and more than 10 projects approved every year. The Lab Center takes the project as the gripping device to promote the combination of theory and practice. Through practice students' comprehensive abilities are improved, including but not limited to the sense of teamwork, ability of communication and expression, ability of data mining, ability of problem analysis, and ability of computer operation. Project research training provides students with language information processing skills for their later career development in teaching or management.
Since its establishment the Lab Center has kept pace with the times. As early as 2011, the center has been fully built as a modern base of teaching innovation, with a spacious, clean, and well-equipped environment for lab work and teaching. In 2018, the equipment of the center was upgraded. In terms of hardware, the performance of computers was improved, and a batch of instruments of teaching and research with high precision, such as larynx instrument and Eye Mark Recorder, were purchased. In terms of software, the center has many kinds of research software, such as SPSS, IKAR Lab, VoiceVista, PPVT. The software and hardware provide guarantee for the daily teaching and research of the center, and the center has realized the functions of efficiently collecting research data, editing and printing materials, processing and analyzing phonetic signals, and implementing dyslexia tests and interventions.
The courses offered by the Experimental Center are continuously enriched, and the course system has been greatly improved, from the courses on language at the initial stage, to the courses on advanced applications of office software and making Chinese webpage, to the recent courses on children's dyslexia, reading and writing interactive prediction and intervention, speech signal analysis. The teaching content is gradually extended from language ontology to various application areas.
The Center is an open and cooperative platform. Since its establishment it has continuously absorbed the advanced experience of other lab centers in SZU. The Center will uphold the idea of "basing on teaching, serving teachers and students, experiment-oriented, and being open", serve undergraduate teaching, serve scientific research, and provide a good environment for all the instructors and students of the college.
