Led by Dr. Dong Li, Associate Director of the Teaching Experiment Center at the School of Humanities, Shenzhen University (SZU), a multidisciplinary research team specializing in the multimodal study of Yue Opera voice recently traveled to Shengzhou—the renowned birthplace of Yue Opera—for an intensive field study at the Shengzhou Yue Opera Art School.

The team carried out a systematic and standardized acoustic data collection process utilizing professional audio research equipment. Focusing on mainstream Yue Opera schools of singing, the researchers invited several professional instructors from the art school to participate in the recording sessions. The team operated with rigorous precision, meticulously fitting laryngographs for the subjects, setting up high-fidelity recording gear, and finely calibrating instrument parameters to ensure data integrity.

Following the acoustic recordings, the team conducted layered and categorized academic interviews. In-depth, on-site discussions were held with the school’s Yue Opera instructors inside the recording studio. These conversations maintained a highly professional atmosphere, covering topics such as vocal techniques, pedagogical frameworks, challenges in intangible cultural heritage preservation, and practical stage experience. The collected data and insights are expected to provide valuable empirical support for the digital preservation and academic study of this traditional Chinese art form.
